Academia.edu seems to spend a lot more of its effort on self-promotion and spam than on being good curators of academic material. Does one really need to know that people from four countries have visited one's paper in the last week? Driving engagement that distracts from the process of actually getting research done is a net negative in my book.

But, yes, if you need a paper, Academia.edu is another possible source.
