Alas, you seem to be correct.
It is very depressing.
Of course, it's not like this is restricted to leftist ideology. It's just an ideology thing. If you hold tightly enough to an ideology that it is emotionally untenable to give it up, you will believe anything else you need to in order to preserve the ideology, no matter how bizarre. (C.f. The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes: "When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.")
From young earth creationism through climate denialism to the Big Lie and "January 6 was Antifa", the right has enthusiastically endorsed or at least not challenged enormously wrong things that are ideologically convenient.
But the left is trying hard to match it, and the "nothingburger" response to the Twitter files is one of the most stark examples ever. It is practically a case-study of why you don't want collusion between government and media, and why you want open rather than secret manipulation of apparently public discourse. And even some reasonably center-left people are yawning and saying, "Whatever!"
And this is from the supposed party of free speech (at least since the 60s)! It's embarrassing.
