Although I specifically was talking about Twitter, Facebook has the same problem, just with a minor tweak. All the same dynamics apply, except it’s better at creating echo-chambers and worse at spreading falsehoods rapidly (but probably only because it’s worse at spreading anything rapidly).
Also, I’m not talking about what Twitter’s legal or fiduciary obligations are — I’m talking about what is a good idea. Municipal bus service is a good idea. Walmart doesn’t have to be the one to supply it. However, if Walmart is a critical supplier of transportation yet is running people over far too often, then we have a problem on our hands, and thus it is with social media and public discourse (and whether we meaningfully have a unified society or not).
