Chronologically, the Republicans started it: Limbaugh and Gingrich share an outsized portion of the blame. And the right still routinely puts the left to shame with the degree to which they fervently embrace counterfactual positions.

At this point there's not much reason to point fingers, though. When your own house is burning down, pointing out that the neighbors' flames are higher isn't going to accomplish much.
