Fair enough--I guess when experimental X is difficult to divorce from political X, it is reasonable to doubt whether X is sufficiently tested by experiment to count as science. So even with the best of intentions you might end up in an "almost science" area like string theory: lovely math, but of dubious correspondence to reality.
