How are you amplifying their humanity by stripping their skills from them? Today we value different things, but many people were skilled craftspeople of their day--just in the skills that were of value in the time and place where they lived.

Plantation owners had no use for lots of scientists, architects, astronomers, etc.--nobody did. That's why there weren't very many.
