I certainly hope Penguin is suggesting as much, because I think the same thing. There is a good deal of research around our need, as social creatures, for belonging.
There's precious little to belong to these days, save one's immutable identity characteristics.
But it's frightfully dangerous, because these sorts of bonds of belonging lead to really pernicious impacts on society once you look at the flip-side: if that is your in-group, who are the out-groups and what does tension between those groups look like?
