I don't entirely disagree, but the problem with the account as it stands is that it doesn't explain voting trends. You would expect that if this was the primary story, support for Republicans would be plummeting among independents, who think all this nonsense is nonsense. That leaves you with either (1) the contention that voters are too stupid for Democracy--in which case the New Right is actually correct that some drastic change is in order (though they might be wrong about what); or (2) with the necessity to explain what the heck is going on such that if the Right is such an ideological mess, they can still get considerable support.
