I just walked past a student protest today, and the highest sign with the largest print said, among other things, "Glory to the martyrs."
Do they not realize that it is this sort of attitude--glorification of those who die, especially while committing violence against Israeli civilians--that Israel uses to justify the extent of force that it uses? Even if they didn't mean the Hamas fighters who attacked Israel in full knowledge that they were very likely to be killed while they were murdering civilians, how can they not expect others to read the sign like that?
Do they not realize that in glorifying the death of Palestinians, they reduce the commitment of people to stop the death of Palestinians?
I had other things to do so I didn't engage them Socratically to get their answers to these questions. But it's depressing that one would have to ask.
