Not just paint everyone with the same brush as you use to mark the most extreme edges?
You don't need to appeal to very much of the center before they can't enact legislative goals. (A motivated third or quarter can, if there is otherwise enough apathy; less than about a quarter can't, because then extreme candidates can't even win their own primaries in safe states.)
