I pretty much agree with your points, but it's worth noting that the anecdote also is in concordance with a large rise in mental health issues among teens and younger adults, among other things. (See The Coddling of the American Mind for a variety of other evidence and examples.)
However, one wouldn't know this from an anecdote alone, and the degree to which narrative grips our attention tends to lead us to overestimate anecdotes' relevance. Your warning is well-advised.
