I think this is still true of liberals.
What has happened is that the some of the left has strayed from liberalism. For the illiberal left, intellectual freedom is no longer regarded as a virtue if it permits wicked thoughts. Groups and ideology, not individuals, are the focus of care, so bonds of friendship (or livelihoods) are of secondary concern when the group or ideology is challenged.
I agree with your assessment of why the left is allowing this to happen largely unchallenged. But I also think it's worth sparing a thought for how the dogmatism of the populist authoritarian right feeds a counter-dogmatism on the left. It's not just a liberal cop-out.
