I worry that this is in substantial part because the stigma is gone. The appellation "white supremacist" doesn't have that much sting any longer. And it's not mostly because of the right and Trump, but because the left has widened the definition and tried applying it more places.

If we decide to widen the definition of violent crime to include jaywalking because delaying traffic "does violence to the drivers", then our violent crime numbers will go up, but really nothing should change.

But if people who weren't committing murder before suddenly decide it's fine and start murdering because it's violence, just like jaywalking that would be completely wrongheaded, horrible, and...not completely unexpected, because words do matter.

By far the largest share of blame for the rise of virulent white supremacy belongs to those who are engaging in it. But the left has also taken poor care of its rhetorical weapons. If you use your vorpal sword to chop wood and swat flies, it might not be sharp enough to behead the next dragon that comes around.
