I'm not sure it's worth very much effort to figure out which side of an arbitrary dividing line one is on, especially in a multifaceted phenomenon like "homophobia".

If one instead asks something like "what are the spectrum of attitudes, and frequency of each, in contemporary society, regarding homosexuality", then one might get enough information to start being able to make reasoned decisions that go beyond simply reading out one's initial reflexive reactions and then trying to rationalize them.

This is very much not in the prescribed intellectual tradition of Critical Theory. Nothing stops you, precisely, as a critical theorist, but the focus is entirely elsewhere. It leans into challenging the status quo (without precise, justifiable criteria for what makes for a sensible evidence-based challenge and what is baseless contrarianism) and into forming dynamic unity with the oppressed.
