In the United States, the maternal mortality rate is about 0.02% (which is insanely high for a supposedly modern industrialized country, but that's what it is). In contrast, the automobile accident mortality rate is about 0.05% per year.
The risk of death of having one child is equivalent to the risk of driving roughly 14,000 miles.
Unless you don't drive, it's really hard to take the "risk your life" part seriously. Discomfort, injury, change of lifestyle, etc., all are reasonable concerns, but risk to life is not unless you're in a particularly vulnerable subgroup.
