Is the "to achieve some purpose" critical here?

If yes, then we recover objectivity when we try to simply understand, not understand-such-that-we-can-achieve-X. (As cognitive advice, this is sound: motivated reasoning is intense stuff.)

If no, why isn't this just Descartes' demon again? Our epistemology doesn't give us full direct access to ontology--yep! Right! Got it!
