It certainly does if you're always talking about group membership and never about common humanity.

It does even more if you get slapped down when you talk about common humanity and are corrected by saying you should talk about group identity instead.

It need not, but that is different from it does not. You can elevate both ideas. But it did not sound like that was being done here.
