It's a pretty lonely "we" though; there aren't many people who actually want such things.

Elle certainly doesn't act like she does. She writes well and conveys complex concepts well, but unfortunately she takes critique extremely poorly. If you view her stories as material to draw upon for creative, respectful intellectual conflict, it's great. But try to actually point out to her places where her evidence is too scant to support her claim, or where there is a good deal of conflicting evidence? She doesn't back off doublequick, or at all. Have you actually tried to respectfully disagree with her on something that she views as her area of expertise (but where you happen to know with a high degree of confidence that she's mistaken)?

Even if you're not a climate scientist, if you're standing in the shade with typical terrain surrounding you and your properly calibrated thermometer is reading 47C, you know they're (very likely) wrong if they say this region doesn't get over 43C. You don't have to be an expert in all of climate science, just in reading a thermometer. Same deal if the expert Elle quotes says (not in the part she quotes), "This is what it's looking like, but we really don't know; there's so little prehistoric anthropology that's been done in Africa" and Elle says, "It is this way, it's proven, done, I'm the expert, quoting expert experts."

It's more peaceful now that she's blocked me. But after receiving some of the most caustic, demeaning, inattentive, and appeal-to-authority-with-little-substance style of interactions from her out of anyone on Medium (fortunately not distressing to me because I've developed a thick enough layer of asbestos from my own time in academia), I find it a bit glaring to juxtapose Elle (whose writing I do like, if she's creating original content, and isn't challenged in any way) with your statement above.

Maybe it's a reflex she's developed from having to deal with all the actual idiots who genuinely don't know what they're talking about at all. But because of this, be careful that you don't misjudge Argumentative Penguin's interactions with Elle. It might be that AP is clueless in this matter and Elle has solid grounds for objection. But it also might be that AP has made cogent observations and Elle is stonewalling with claims of authority and with references that are vaguely on topic but don't settle the matter. Make sure you don't judge this one for certain on the shape of what it looks like; you have to go check the details. Idiot mansplaining being dismissively debunked by an academically knowledgeable woman looks superficially rather like incisive critique from a man being fallaciously dismissed using academic grandstanding by a woman. (Genders irrelevant here, actually.)

Anyway, I don't know what men could possibly be on about with your physics explanations. They're extremely clear, and not controversial as physics, so after enjoying the articles I mostly haven't even bothered reading the comments. I guess, if I want to lose a little more faith in humanity (or at least in social media), I should start.
