It's an important point to not be too idealistic about what one can expect from children, but it's worth noting that quite a number of societies that have considerably less focus on individualism and considerably more focus on the group nonetheless seem to do quite well for themselves (e.g. Japan).
So I think to be a really substantive argument you would need to account for this--perhaps the cultural mismatch of valuing the group in a culture that is geared towards the individual is a problem? Or perhaps the societies that seem to do well with a less individualistic approach are actually doing more poorly than we think?
