It's an interesting article, but...the basis for it seems a bit scant?
One guy (an obvious outsider) spends two months with a society and somehow he understands the benefits and drawbacks of the society well enough to be an authority?
Color me skeptical. That's long enough to get a caricature, but I doubt it's long enough to reliably understand the deep systemic problems, if any. You can spend two months in the United States, off social media, and spin a story of fantastic opportunity and technologically-fueled luxury.
I would much rather hear accounts from Mosuo people themselves. At least I'd read Choo Waihong, who spent seven years rather than two months (interview with her covering her book on the Mosuo: https://asianreviewofbooks.com/content/modernization-and-the-the-mosuo-an-interview-with-choo-waihong/). Of course, any individual account can be biased (and the skill of the writer also matters), but at least the greater experience can help reveal features that are less obvious.
