Lots of good points--but if your Ph.D. program isn't teaching you to be a researcher, something's really wrong with that program! (The other six needed skills are, I agree, neither taught nor assessed particularly well.)

Also, the people who focus on publications over everything have a point, even a compassionate, human point: after putting in 10+ years of effort, to permanently cripple your future prospects because you can't focus on the most scrutinized output would be really sad. And it definitely happens. That doesn't mean that the people who are critical actually have the postdoc's best interests at heart, or that they are expressing that concern the best way. Or that academia should judge things this way. But it is a huge and real danger for an academic career path.
