No, you almost had him, or you could have if you'd made the right points, but then lost the argument by going off on an irrelevant tangent, making it seem like you had nothing to say to counteract his perspective.

That doesn't make him right and you wrong, but it does mean he won the argument and you lost. (It's possible to be right but lose an argument by formulating one's arguments badly.)
