Our society increasingly values intellectual skills that take a long time to develop, so having incredibly difficult to enter higher education doesn't seem like a great idea. That somewhere should be incredibly difficult so that we train an educational SAS, to use a cultural reference relevant to you, is reasonable. But we need much of the rank and file to get higher education too. We also need to educate them better as kids, but it seems unlikely that this will be enough; trade schools are fine things but don't really prepare people for flexibility. Not that universities are ideal either, but they have more room to push in that direction, and that direction is more needed than it used o be.
