PubMed Central gets several million per day. arXiv gets 30 million per month.

If you hadn't used such superlative language, I wouldn't have a quarrel with it--you just overstepped what can reasonably be supported.

Also, I haven't forgotten anything about how academic research works. When seminal papers are in access-restricted journals, you're stuck. Otherwise, unless the whole field is locked down, you can just pick another paper. I do this all the time. Where I work, there are many journals that have to be individually paid for--and I don't bother even though it's free-to-me because it's a bit more of a hassle. Since I can find an alternative paper faster than I can go through the forms for journal access, I find another paper.

Open access is very important. But we should fairly give credit where credit is due.
