Scientist Rebellion wasn't on my radar, but from what I can see has the same, scientifically-informed positions about what the risks are that I have. For instance, they say, "Increasingly severe heatwaves, droughts and natural disasters are occurring year after year, while sea levels may rise by several meters this century, displacing hundreds of millions of people living in coastal areas."
Hmm, guess what I said before?
I'm not downplaying it, but overplaying it is also bad because it leads people to make harmful decisions. If you have an infected toe, "Let's amputate the leg!!" is the right choice if the infection is likely to spread; it is not if it is almost surely going to resolve. "Ignore it!" isn't the only other option: you can use antibiotics, soak the toe in hot water, etc.--likewise, with climate, knowing the scope of the danger is critical for making sensible choices to mitigate the overall harm and danger.
Stick to how bad things actually are! It's terrifying enough. What do you think people are going to say? "Yeah, who cares, I'll relocate 20% of Floridians and build them new homes in my spare time."
