Strong female leads have been carrying stories for ages.

"We have a shaky story and somewhat hard-to-relate-to main character but if we have a female lead instead of a somewhat more expected male lead that will rescue it!" turned out not to be a thing.

Maybe it would have if strong female leads had actually been a twist so shocking that it could carry an entire story that was otherwise not so great. But, um, it's not, like, 1950?

So audiences have loved strong female leads for a long time (Carter's Wonder Woman, Weaver in Alien, etc.), and that means you need a good story and relatable characters with a compelling development arc and all the rest. Good storytelling, you know.
