That science builds a consensus is a side-effect, not the cause, of its utility. Robust systems are typically diverse systems, because although the fringes are always in trouble, so many different things are going on that it's very hard to have individual events that muck up everything, and the survivors can take over (either literally or figuratively).
There isn't, however, a diversity of ways to get into most buildings: people go for the doors. That almost always works. Walking through the walls doesn't, windows can, sometimes, but are extremely awkward, etc. etc..
