That's a very convenient belief to spread when you have failed to bother mentioning the rather horrific consequences of the collapse of the old order of governance in France.

How about you go back and explain that, in detail, hm? "The old social order collapsed, so we murdered a bunch of people for wrongthink (and then the leaders who were murdering were themselves murdered); then everyone was so exhausted by the terror that they fell in line behind a dictatorial expansionist who brought war to all of Europe and thereby killed about 3% of the population of France directly and more indirectly."

Gee, that sounds awesome! I can't wait! Except with nuclear weapons this time!

In contrast, Britain had similarly entrenched royalty/aristocracy at various points in history and it managed to get out of it without nearly so much pain and destruction, thank you very much.
