The myth of Hitler's incompetence is far more dangerous than the myth of Hitler's genius because if Hitler was necessarily a moron, then if you see anyone remotely competent or talented in any way, you know they're not Hitler.
You don't give him credit for his conquests, but who was ultimately responsible for the generals who led the attacks?
You don't give him credit for Germany's incredible industrial power, but who was in charge during Germany's remarkable and immense recovery after the Great Depression--and whose idea was it to build up the production capacity for a whole lot of high-tech weapons?
The problem with Hitler was that he was not a moron, but smart and competent enough--either personally or indirectly via those he chose as his subordinates--to be dangerous, and thereby perpetrate one of the most horrific episodes in human history.
