The obliviousness tactic is especially advisable in academia, as you run into a higher proportion of people there who are themselves oblivious and really don’t mean to be demeaning even if it comes off as such.

(In mixed settings where academics from the hard sciences have to liaise with “normal people” I observe this friction a lot.)
