The trend towards demedicalization is one I find highly perplexing. While I understand, to an extent, some of the motives and arguments, the bottom line is that it makes for a very poor case to present to the rest of society:

"I'm fine! Nothing is wrong! And you have to pay for these expensive procedures for me, and no, you don't get a different type of expensive procedure paid for you just because you want it when nothing is wrong with you. It's all because I'm fine in this particular way!"

It really does not compute, and provides heaps of ammunition to hateful forces. Accepting this as the preferred message seems predicated on the embrace of an indifferent, selfish society, where supporting each other through genuine hardships is viewed as a weakness for all involved.

There's no personal failing in needing treatment for cleft lip, bipolar disorder, a painful hip, gender dysphoria, or impacted wisdom teeth. In each case, there are medical techniques that improve people's lives, and this is important because the status quo for them, sans treatment, is a problem.

We should strive for a society where we all get the care we need, of whichever type we need, when we need it, and without stigma. And then we can get on with the rest of our lives.
