There is so much potential and inspiration to be had from many cultures in the world! I’m really looking forward to the many incredible stories that they will foster.
Note, however, that a lot of displeasure is expressed not about enriching our fantasy and science fiction with more sources of inspiration, but re-imagining a previous well-loved story that was inspired by European culture and originally populated with Europeans. This is both disrespectful to the original culture (hi, I’m going to appropriate you in the name of diversity!), and insulting to other cultures (y’all’s cultures are too weak to motivate any good stories, we’re gonna reuse this one).
(There are also some loud, obnoxious bigots who will complain whenever anything doesn’t fit the exact mold that they have in mind, but hopefully those individuals will be diluted out by the large number of people who like good stories.)
That the doors are opening for a more expansive view of fantasy and science fiction than ever before should thrill all fans of these genres. I’m certainly excited. Science fiction and fantasy is all about opening your mind to new experiences. How could any serious fan not welcome these developments?
