This hasn't been historically true in the U.S. since 1970. (This may be due to reproductive rights issues, which have been very strongly aligned with party, but it's a very important exception to what you're saying.)

Things have been different in the U.K.. So your description is plausible there.

But nobody has much sorted themselves by gender in Australia until very recently.

So I'm not sure your analysis generalizes very well.
