Does anyone treat these musings as serious hypotheses and come up with experiments to test them and compare them to other hypotheses?

For instance, are memes instances of force relations of a particular nature? Does conceptualizing a situation in terms of force relations give one greater predictive power over the unfolding of social trends than does some other approach (e.g. individual-as-agent, or historical analysis)? How do you determine whether particular force relations will interact or not?
