This is an astute observation (as is the workplace issue one), but I think it goes a bit further, too.
If I see an email or post from Dr. Hartford or Leslie Miller or Ryo Kurosawa or Acorn292, I have no idea what gender they are. Yeah, if there's a picture I can probably figure it out. But if not, I don't know. And honestly, why does it matter? Isn't it--outside of specific discussions of issues of gender, outside of dating--actually the content that matters?
If I see Dr. Hartford (she/her), all that does is raise the potential for me to color the content in some unjustified way, whether positive or negative. I'll still do my best not to (I think I mostly don't personally--everyone is a potential Argumentative Penguin to me, until they prove otherwise). But in a world of implicit-bias awareness, doing one's utmost to trigger it at every opportunity just seems daft.
