This makes a great deal of sense--selection effects can be enormous--but has anyone worked it out quantitatively to see whether and to what extent this is true?

For instance, this argues that there would be a much narrower gap in outcome between income-matched parents where the other parent had died in a sudden accident than in cases of divorce and custody awarded to the mother.
