To be fair, he himself seems to recognize the stupidity and pointlessness, and does a lot of videos that are essentially charity and donates a lot of money and attention to things that are actually worthwhile (like Clean Seas: https://www.cleanseas.org/).

So, yeah, a lot of pointless wasteful antics...but also an engine to turn some of the fascination with pointless waste into something of societal value.
