Unfortunately, the prerequisites for this--dehumanization--are being embraced by both farther right and farther left viewpoints. It's very dangerous to set up this kind of reciprocal dehumanization situation where each side can feed off the other. Fighting fire with fire in a house made of paper is a spectacularly bad idea, but it seems like what we're doing.

So we have to be far more careful with the approach to hate speech than we've been lately. That it's increasing is mostly I think evidence that we've been doing it exactly backwards.
