Well, does it, though? It seems like it ought to, given all the people who say "Oh, I saw X, who looked like me, do really well at Y, and it made me think I could do Y too!" Seems like the male role model for boys ought to fall into that general category, and that this should be positive.
But you can't really know if you don't study it. Maybe it's hard to study, so we can't find out to a worthwhile degree of confidence. But there are lots of intuitively obvious things that are wrong, even if a lot of them are right, too.
