Well, it was a very compelling article, but the, "male organism finds female organism of reproductive age attractive, OH MY GOD!" angle of the was a bit overdone, though I'm not sure MXM picked the best way to make the point. And Dana did temper the reaction somewhat.

It's still worth making the point that MXM kind of was. If you don't get to tell people to just not be attracted to members of the same sex because our culture says you can't, why would we be able to for the opposite sex just because culture decided that some proxy variable tells you you can't?

There is a huge gulf, however, between having some degree of attraction and what one does with it. It's hard to excuse leering regardless; and one can be expected to direct one's attentions to partners who are considered culturally appropriate as long as the expectation isn't too stifling.

Telling someone they can't eat is a non-starter ("don't be gay"). Telling them they can't eat pork--even if pork is tasty--is workable. (C.f. Islam, Judaism with pork; "adults should date adults"). Maybe there's a good reason not to (e.g. ethics, chance). But telling them that pork doesn't even taste good, if it does, is also a non-starter.
