Yes, Hamas' attack which killed ~1200 was assuredly quite a bit less than a "pinprick" of genocide. And yet even that much less is still horrible.
Also, it seems to have escaped your notice that Israel has had antagonistic relations with the Palestinians for a century, and one century vs five is not such an egregious comparison--or that otherwise you should compare battle-to-battle.
Anyway, genocide is an outcome (or goal), not a rate. Otherwise a spontaneous hate crime committed with a firearm yields a death rate of about one person per ten seconds, and therefore is a genocide.
