You can't just state "matter doesn't do this" and have it be true. Why can't matter implement consciousness? It can implement air pressure. It can implement logic. It can implement your bicep. None of these things are remotely straightforward to understand.

That if consciousness is just a mechanism, we should easily understand how it works, seems utterly unfounded.
