You don't need to be a strict falsificationist to be doing science, but if your ideas are not equivalently rigorously tested against reality, it's not science.

Falsification is just a very straightforward way to set up to do the test. It's so hard to overcome cognitive biases sometimes that straightforwardness has its place.
