You draw a link between emotional toughness and the epidemic of loneliness, rejecting, to some extent, Baker's explanation of increasing demands on time.

But the problem with this idea is that there has been a concerted effort to try to de-emphasize toughness as a masculine virtue at the very same time as the loneliness epidemic has been getting worse. Furthermore, there isn't a particularly good correlation between depression and a more traditional man-boxy culture, at least at the state level. For instance, Nebraska has comparatively low levels of male depression, despite being a deep red state with a strong conservative values.

So it sure seems like something else is going on. Maybe the "Man Box" plays some role, but the explanatory power is poor.
