You know, if you were writing satire for right-wingers to make fun of, you'd be hard-pressed to do better than this article.
Given all the truly horrific and tragic instances of black people being murdered by police for no reason aside from the prejudice and us-against-them militaristic attitude from the police, why on earth would you pick a case where the suspect (allegedly) literally shot at police and ran (wearing a ski mask!) rather than surrendering?!
It would have been great if the police had managed to apprehend the guy instead. Taking someone's life should be the absolute last resort--but they were really close to the last resort here, if the claims are true. (Keeping in mind that police do always have to expect that suspects may have a concealed firearm, especially if they've already used one.) Now if the claims are not true, and often the police accounts stretch the truth and/or outright falsehoods, then this may in fact be another one of the horrific and tragic incidents, but if those details come out write the story then.
I agree that pretext stops are a bad idea and should be discontinued. But seriously. There are a lot of people's names who I would say: Breonna, Amir, Isaiah (even though he shot at police--it's basically Andrew Coffee IV all over again except Isaiah died), James (even though shooting in the air to celebrate New Years' is dangerous), etc. etc..
Unless the facts of the matter are different than the police are claiming--and I do retain a lot of skepticism about any claims from police given how many times they've been shown to be inaccurate or flat-out wrong--then adding Jayland's name would just dishonor the others.
