You mean like all the attacks on rural white americans, as a group, for being racist bigots? Yeah. That could cause some distress.

The question is what to do about it.

Say something stupid and, yes, people should push back against the stupidity. It is not generally advised to elevate this to a determination of the personal character of the person. Generally the advice is to offer them a way to become less wrong. This might involve some stern language if one of the main hurdles to overcome is comfort with the stupid idea, or if one wants to signal to others the strength of disagreement. But it shouldn't be a condemnation of someone's character, shouldn't be reason to write them off.

On social media, people of all stripes do the latter incessantly. And they--we--shouldn't. It comes naturally, but it's not a good way to build a society. We should recognize, consciously, since our intuitions keep mucking it up, that in a global society what we need to value is harmony, bringing more people in, not finding ways to shut them out, while still allowing enough specialization, enough personal culture to leave people happy (since it does seem important to many people).

The way to negotiate all this is with speech.
